Seventy-Nine

Today is my Dad’s 79th Birthday and I wanted to surprise him by dedicating a blog-post just for him. My Dad has such a heart for Jesus so what better way to celebrate his birthday than by sharing his story and testimony. My Dad, Gordon, (below, with my Mom) has the most amazing life-transforming testimony ever, so you’re going to absolutely love this.

The year was 1983 and I was just 2 years old. Mom and Dad were making plans to have a ‘dedication’ for me instead of having a traditional ‘christening’. Mom didn’t feel comfortable with getting me christened as she felt it would be hypocritical, seeing as neither her nor Dad were church goers and didn’t really believe in God.

My parents picked the local Pentecostal Church for the dedication and my Dad attended a Sunday service on his own to get an idea of what the dedication would be like. That night the Pastor gave a message, sharing the parable of ‘The Prodigal Son’ found in Luke 15:11-32.

The story is about two brothers; the younger one of which asks to receive an early inheritance from his father’s estate, before setting off for a life of wild living. The younger son continued to squander his fortune which resulted in him taking a job, feeding pigs.

The young son eventually comes to his senses and decides to return home and ask his father for forgiveness. With arms open wide and without hesitation, the father embraces the son and puts on an enormous feast to celebrate his son’s return.

When Dad heard the message of ‘The Prodigal Son’, he recognised himself as the rebellious son who had gone astray. Dad immediately repented, gave his life to the Lord and was filled with the Holy Spirit, receiving the gift of tongues.

God spoke to Dad’s heart that night and he was led to quit his job, playing piano in pubs and clubs. Dad was convicted by the Holy Spirit to give up the ‘worldly’ life he was living and worship God with the musical talents he had.

Entertaining in the local pubs meant that Dad had developed a bit of a drinking habit and he would drink every time he was working. This had a negative effect on family life and his heavy drinking had even led to him being banned from driving. The most amazing part of Dad’s testimony is that God completely delivered him from the alcohol addiction and he has not touched a drop of alcohol since the day he got saved!

My Dad’s life was radically transformed when he gave his life to Jesus and there were many other family members who got saved as a result of this. Dad has remained faithful to the Lord, his faith faltering not even once.

Matthew 25:21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master.

I want to say a big thank you, Dad for consistently being faithful, for encouraging me to pursue a relationship with Jesus and for teaching me the ways of the Lord. You taught me the value of worship, the power of prayer and how to overcome the enemy through praise.

Love you Dad!

  3. That’s a fantastic testimony Haley! And your dad’s salvation apparently has affected your life’s direction and testimony. It’s also a great great blessing that you were spared a childhood with an alcoholic dad.
    Praise Jesus 👍🙏

  4. As parents sharing our Faith with our family; especially God’s kids; is a primordial responsibility.

The story of dad’s conversion is evidence of God’s love for us. Dad being there and the preacher speaking on this great parable are Divine Providence; showing exactly how God desires to be active in our lives.

I am always moved by these true stories. God Be PRAISED!

You’re relationship with your dad too is heart warming.

May God continue to strengthen your relationship and Bless dad and mom,

Happy Birthday Dad, your doing a great job!

    I’ll pray for you today,
    Patrick

  5. Amen!!! 🙂 What a powerful testimony!!! My home pastor’s story is the same when he fully turned over to the Lord, his addiction to drinking was completely gone.

It’s important people realize this does not always happen, but God does equip us and helps us turn away. 🙂 ❤

    1. Wow! That’s amazing, T.R. I do love to hear testimony’s like my dad’s and your pastor’s but you’re right, sometimes it’s a gradual process and journey. My dad is an all or nothing kind of guy though to be fair. 😊💞
